N–S cross-section of the Molasse basin (Lemke 1988). It shows the asymmetric geometry of a typical foreland basin that is dipping to the South towards the Alps. The geothermal reservoirs of the Upper Jurassic carbonates (blue) are therefore buried deep enough in the greater Munich area to reach attractive temperatures for heat and further south even for combined heat and power production
