Temperature distribution at a depth of 3000 m bsl predicted for different ranges of thermal properties as assessed in a sensitivity analysis. Maps a–f show the influence of the thermal conductivity of specific model units on the temperature distribution. A higher thermal conductivity of the Alpine Body leads to an average cooling of the model. A different heat conductivity of the Tauern Body mostly affects the Alpine area, while the Molasse Basin remains mostly unchanged. Increased thermal conductivity of the upper crystalline crust leads to higher temperatures in the Molasse Basin and the Alps, but lower temperatures in the central and northern parts of the model
